5 Reasons Why You Should Hire a Freelancer Designer Over an Agency
Many business owners often struggle to decide between hiring a freelance designer and an agency. While there are many advantages to each, this article is going to make the case why freelance designers are the better choice.
This isn’t to say that agencies are bad, but you need to understand what makes them great, and what makes them bad, before making any design choices.
1. A More Personalized Experience
It’s no secret that agencies are large. At one time, an agency may have been smaller, but most medium-sized agencies staff anywhere from 15-50 people, while larger ones typically have more than 100 employees.
What does this mean for you? It means you get disconnected service. Your project will be passed along between different designers, feedback is often limited, and sometimes you may even feel like your comments and feedback are being ignored.
But when you work with a freelance designer, you are often treated to a much more intimate design process. Freelance designers make a living providing a personalized experience.
Here’s how my process works.
Before I get started, I take the time to get to know my client, I thoroughly research their business, and make sure that we are a good fit. Sure, I could take any project on, but I want to provide you with exceptional service and the only way I’m going to do that is if we click.
Freelance designers focus on building relationships with their clients because their approach to a project allows for this to happen. When you work with a large agency, there are simply too many people working on a given project and too many managers signing off on each stage, creating a clear disconnect between a client and the actual designer working on their project.
Have you ever heard of the expression, “jack of all trades, master of none?” This expression applies to the agency experience.
I’m not trying to downplay the skills of designers working at larger agencies. Many of those designers are exceptionally talented and bright people. Instead, I’m focusing on the fact that these talented designers are forced to stick to a script when it comes to design. Their creativity is limited because their agency wants them to follow a specific style guide that has been established.
Freelance designers don’t have to worry about this. Even better, most freelance designers have specialized styles that they offer. As a business owner, working with freelancers provides you with the ability to pick and choose a style that suits your business.
3. Flexible Pricing
Your mileage will vary when it comes to freelance designer pricing. But I can almost guarantee you that a freelance designer will be cheaper than a large agency.
And you know why?
Large agencies inflate project estimates in order to profit off of the work of their designers. Yes, this offers you access to multiple designers, but you probably don’t need that in the first place.
Truthfully, a respectable freelance designers will offer you an attractive rate, provide high quality work, and has the ability to be flexible when it comes to pricing. Agencies often don’t have the ability to be flexible because the project manager you are working with doesn’t set the prices.
4. More Involvement
I don’t know about you, but feedback is an important aspect of the design process. As a freelance graphic and web designer, I cannot envision how a project can be successful without it.
Most agencies will include a little bit of feedback, but the entire process is limited, sometimes you are only allowed so many revisions, and the entire experience can often feel formulaic.
That just doesn’t work for me.
I love getting feedback from my clients after an initial design concept. It’s this feedback that allows me to improve your design and to make it truly special for you. And as a client, it’s this feedback that ensures you get what you want in the end. Because, in the end, it’s your project and you deserve to voice your opinion throughout the design process. You shouldn’t have to pay extra for that right, it should be included standard.
5. A Fluid Design Process
The design process tends to be fluid when you work with a freelance designer. They are their own boss and they are able to approach the project however they want.
Now, keep this in mind.
As long as you hire a reputable freelance designer, working with them will provide you with a unique design experience. I mentioned it above, but agencies are formulaic in their approach, and the entire design process tends to be rigid.
Some businesses like a rigid design process, while others value the creativity that comes with fluidity. In the end, the choice is yours.
Finding the Right Freelance Designer
I’m not going to try and tell you it’s easy to find the right freelance designer. There’s many of us out there. The best thing you can do is come up with a general style that you want for your project. If you can determine what that is, it’ll make it easier for you to hunt for a freelance designer that is capable of capturing it.
There’s nothing wrong with working with agencies. They have all the resources you need to complete a project, but it comes at the cost of fluidity, personalization, and other areas that I feel are essential to the design process.
